The graduates completed studies in clinical medicine, biomedical sciences, nursing and midwifery, education, theology, business administration and agri-business.

At the same ceremony, Pastor Petro Sukali, president of the Malawi Union Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, was inaugurated as the university’s new Chancellor.

Preaching at the baccalaureate service on Sabbath, 24 October, Dr. Felix Njini, Education Director for the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division (SID), challenged the graduates to be agents of integrity in their workplaces.

“Most individuals involved in corruption in Africa are intellectuals. You must be exemplary,” he said. Dr. Njini also cautioned them against pride, urging them to remain humble and open to advice.

The guest of honour, Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology Hon. Francis Folley, commended MAU and other private universities for complementing government efforts to widen access to higher education.

“Government has broadened the Higher Education Students’ Loans facility to assist more students, and the introduction of free secondary education will enable more learners to attain university entry qualifications,” Folley said.

Dr. Davie Zolowere, Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Council of Malawi, addressed the clinical medicine graduates directly on professional conduct.

“Those who fail to uphold professional ethics risk having their licences revoked,” he said, adding that the nation trusts them with lives and they must serve with integrity and compassion.
