The Indian Ocean Union Conference (IOUC) of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has opened its Media Congress at Rihanala Village in Mahavelona Foulpointe, drawing nearly 130 Adventist communicators, radio staff, and media ministry representatives from across the Union for four days of training and reflection.
Held from 30 July to 2 August 2026, the congress runs under the theme "Communication for Mission", an emphasis that aligns with the Seventh-day Adventist Church's current quinquennial strategic focus, "Founded on Biblical Principles, Centered on Mission."
The congress opened with a devotional message by IOUC Communication Director Pastor Rado Rakotonandrasana, who challenged participants to consider their personal relationship with Christ as the foundation for their work in media ministry.
Drawing from Luke 9:9, Rakotonandrasana contrasted Herod's stated curiosity about Jesus with those in Scripture who sought the Lord genuinely. Although Herod possessed power and opportunity, Rakotonandrasana said, he never truly encountered Christ, a warning to those who work in Christian communication.
"Christian communication can have a lasting impact only when it flows from a sincere and personal pursuit of Jesus Christ in the life of the communicator," he said.
Drawing on Jeremiah 29:13-14, "when people seek God with all their hearts, they will find Him", Rakotonandrasana said the first responsibility of media professionals is not to produce content or master new platforms, but to seek Christ personally so that their productions and testimony can genuinely reach listeners, viewers, and online audiences.
Following the message, participants entered a period of prayer, committing their personal lives, ministries, and the Union's media mission into God's hands.
Beyond devotional programming, the congress includes a series of training sessions and expert presentations designed to strengthen participants' professional skills. Several invited presenters are addressing the effective operation of Adventist media, with an emphasis on communication that is Bible-based, Christ-centred, and mission-focused. Presentation sessions began on the opening day.
The IOUC covers the Indian Ocean territories of the Southern Africa-Indian Ocean Division, including Madagascar, Mauritius, Réunion, Seychelles, Mayotte, and Comoros. The Media Congress is one of several regional efforts across the Division to strengthen Adventist digital and broadcast communication as the global Church prepares for the OneVoice27 evangelistic initiative in September 2027.
