ADRA Zambia has graduated its first cohort of 13 farmers from the Food Sovereignty Initiative for Africa (FSI), a three-month practical programme covering climate-smart agriculture, hydroponics, and modern water management.

The Adventist Development and Relief Agency Zambia (ADRA Zambia) has graduated its first cohort of 13 farmers from the Food Sovereignty Initiative for Africa (FSI) practical curriculum, marking a milestone in efforts to strengthen food security and agricultural productivity across the region. A second cohort began training three weeks ago and is currently underway.

The three-month intensive programme combines theory with hands-on field experience, equipping participants with practical skills in climate-smart agriculture, composite mineral fertilisers, clean energy applications, and modern water management systems.

FSI is implemented by ADRA Zambia in partnership with ADRA International, ADRA Australia, and GoodOne Global. The initiative is designed to transform regional agricultural productivity while strengthening household and community food sovereignty across Africa, with a focus on local production and reduced dependence on food imports.

Participants are trained in innovative approaches, including modified hydroponic gardening, sustainable year-round food production, and modern farming technologies suited to challenging climatic conditions. The curriculum aims to improve yields and build resilience against climate change.

One of the first cohort graduates, Ladslaus Banda, said the training had reshaped his understanding of agriculture.

"The FSI training has opened my eyes to new farming methods that can help us produce more food throughout the year. I have learned practical techniques that I can apply in my community to improve food production and support families facing food insecurity," Banda said.

ADRA Zambia says initiatives such as FSI continue to empower communities with sustainable agricultural solutions that promote resilience, improve livelihoods, and contribute to long-term food sovereignty across the region.
